Possible Landing Spots for Nnamdi Asomugha

Here are the 5 most likely landing spots for this year's premier free agent.

5. New England Patriots-
When high-priced players have made their money and want to take the discount in pursuit of a ring, the Patriots are always a common name thrown around in free agent circles. Perpetually near the top of the AFC East, the Pats would absolutely salivate over the prospect of having a shutdown corner opposite Devin McCourty, coming off of a fine season himself. Asomugha would solidify a defense that was a bit shaky last season, and possibly give New England the last piece it needs to get over the hump and back to the big game.

4. Baltimore Ravens-
The Ravens haven’t had a shutdown corner since Chris McAllister. NA21 fits the bill there, and shores up a defense that saw the Houston Texans (!) march down the field on back to back 90-yard drives on them in Week 14. Ed Reed already does enough damage roaming the entire field. Think about what mayhem would ensue if he only had to worry about one side of the field. Look out NFL.

3. Houston Texans-
The team’s best corner Dunta Robinson jumped ship to Atlanta and absolutely cleaned up, getting the second-biggest contract for a cornerback in history last year (behind Asomugha himself). Nnamdi seems like a pretty good replacement to me. Wade Phillips tries to restore some coaching legitimacy with a move to be the Texans DC this year after a rough year with the Cowboys. Mario Williams is a key aspect of that, with supposedly an unchanging responsibility set in Phillips’s scheme. Getting Nnamdi on board would be another cornerstone to make the transition’s growing pains less noticeable. If the Texans are serious about getting out of neutral, Bob McNair has a great chance to show it with Asomugha.

2. New York Jets-
Have a weakness on your team? No problem if your name’s Woody Johnson. The Jets’ big name free-agent acquisitions are well documented, and while they do have some work of their own to do (resign S. Holmes, A. Cromartie, make a decision on B. Edwards, etc.), there is literally nothing that Johnson, coach Rex Ryan, and GM Mike Tannenbaum won’t do to get that championship ring. The window of opportunity is closing on this group, and the secondary got torched far too often for the names that make it up. Not to be forgotten in today’s age of stars playing together, All-Everything Jets CB Darrelle Revis and Asomugha have spoken about possibly playing together in the future. If the Revis-Cromartie tandem was scary, the Revis-Asomugha-Cromartie trio is nothing short of terrifying. This is another case of the hometown discount having to play a role, as the Jets are already pretty salary cap-strapped.

1. Philadelphia Eagles-
My personal pick for the winners of the Asomugha Sweepstakes, the stars are simply aligning too perfectly for the Eagles not to make this move. A ton of cap space, a definite need (someone convince me that ANYONE in that Eagles cornerback group besides Asante Samuel can play), and a definite power in the NFC, it all makes a ton of sense for Nnamdi to want to try Philly on for size. With Nnamdi shutting down his side of the field, Samuel would now be able to jump routes without being as exposed as he seems now. Cerebral and rangy, Asomugha has also never benefited from the pass rush that the Eagles have to offer. If this goes down, it’s a certified no-fly zone in Philly.
